Commercial Bird Fouling Cleanup

Feral pigeons, seagulls and many other bird species pose a substantial risk to employers, employees and customers in respect to their fouling, nesting materials which can attract mites, fleas and insects and carcasses all of which pose a substantial health and safety risk to anyone coming into close contact with them, either directly or indirectly and as such, as a commercial business it is your responsible to ensure the safety of these people.

The hazards of bird fouling include:

• Risk of slipping and the subsequent litigation as a result of any injuries.
• Fire escapes can become unusable, possibly leading to closure orders by Fire Officers
• Drains become blocked causing flooding and issue with damp
• Damage to brickwork and painted surfaces
• Damage to the structure of a building due to the weight of fouling in roof voids
• Bacterial and viral disease that can cause life threatening illness

The Health and Safety at Work Act states: ”It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees.” Employees must also take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by what they do or do not do.

Removal of bird droppings is not a job for the untrained or the unprepared and as an employer it is your duty under the law to ensure that when required, any areas affected by bird fouling and the associated mess – has to be removed safely, treated and disposed of correctly and should only be carried out by specialists who understand the risks, and are fully trained and experienced.
